What modafinil is — and what it isn’t
2-minute read
A reference on the molecule, the FDA-approved indications, and the off-label use that drives most of the current market.
Brief definition
Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting compound in the eugeroic class. The molecule was synthesized in France in the late 1970s by Lafon Laboratories. The FDA approved it in December 1998 under the brand name Provigil for narcolepsy. Subsequent approvals expanded the label to shift-work sleep disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
The brand-name patent has lapsed in most jurisdictions. Generic modafinil is the same active pharmaceutical ingredient as Provigil, manufactured under the same chemistry by licensed generic producers.
What it isn’t
Modafinil is not an amphetamine. The pharmacology is different. Dopamine release is a fraction of what amphetamine causes, and the subjective experience tracks that, alert focus rather than stimulated arousal.
It is not a drug that makes a user permanently smarter. The effect is increased wakefulness and a small to moderate boost in measured attention and working memory under fatigue. The user still has to bring the work.
It is not a treatment for clinical conditions outside its FDA-approved indications. Off-label use is widespread and supported by published cognitive literature, but razumna is not a clinical service and makes no claim to treat any condition.
How it is used in practice
The FDA-approved indications cover narcolepsy and sleep-related conditions. Off-label, the molecule sees daily use by clinicians on overnight call, founders running long product cycles, traders timing market hours, graduate students preparing for high-stakes exams, and professionals managing shift work outside the medical setting.
A 100mg–200mg morning dose is the standard. Half-life of 12–15 hours produces eight to twelve hours of perceptible wakefulness in most users. Higher doses do not produce proportionally longer effect, they degrade sleep that night and increase side-effect probability.
Who shouldn’t use it
Anyone with a history of psychiatric instability, modafinil can intensify anxiety in people who run hot already. Anyone with cardiac arrhythmia, unstable hypertension, or known sensitivity to wakefulness agents. Anyone whose problem is inadequate sleep rather than inadequate alertness, modafinil substitutes for nothing here. A consultation with a qualified physician is the right starting point for first-time users.
