Modafinil for Shift Work: Timing, Dosing, and the Sleep Trade
Shift work disorder is one of modafinil's approved uses, not an off-label stretch. The hard part is timing it against a schedule that fights your body clock.

The short answer
Shift work sleep disorder is an approved indication for modafinil, not an off-label use. A 200mg dose taken at the start of a shift covers most of it, because the effect runs 12 to 15 hours. The real difficulty with shift work is not the alertness; it is protecting the daytime sleep that has to follow. Modafinil helps you stay awake on the clock. It does nothing for the sleep you still owe, and dosing it too late in a shift will eat into that sleep.
This is an approved use
Unlike the focus and study use cases, modafinil is formally approved for shift work sleep disorder alongside narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. That matters because it means the alertness benefit during a night shift is well established, not inferred. The brand version was studied and cleared specifically for keeping shift workers functional during their working hours.
Timing it against the shift
The mechanics are simple, the scheduling is not. A single 200mg dose holds a 12 to 15 hour window (Wong et al., 1999), so taking it at the start of a shift carries you across most of it without a redose. For a night shift that starts at 10pm, a dose at 10pm is largely cleared by the following afternoon. The trap is dosing late in the shift to push through the last hours, because that pushes the tail into your daytime sleep window.
The sleep you still owe
This is the honest center of it. Modafinil masks the pressure to sleep; it does not remove the need. A shift worker on modafinil still has to get real recovery sleep during the day, and the drug can make that harder if it is dosed too close to bedtime. The compound buys alertness on the clock. It does not buy rest. Anyone using it to skip sleep entirely is using it against the one thing shift workers most need to protect.
Rotating shifts
Rotating schedules are the worst case for any body clock, and modafinil does not fix the rotation; it makes the awake hours workable. Use it on the shifts that fight your rhythm hardest, keep the single morning-of-shift dose, and treat consistent sleep timing on your days off as the actual intervention. The drug is the patch, not the repair.
Cautions
Modafinil is a prescription medicine. Common side effects are headache, reduced appetite, and disrupted sleep if dosed late. Rare serious skin reactions have been reported for the class; a new rash means stop and seek medical advice. It can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraception, which is worth knowing. This is information, not medical advice, and legal status for personal import varies by country.

Common questions
Is modafinil good for night shifts?
It is an approved treatment for shift work sleep disorder, so the alertness benefit is well established. Take a single 200mg dose at the start of the shift; the 12 to 15 hour window covers most of it. The catch is protecting your daytime sleep afterward.
When should I take it for a night shift?
At or just before the start of the shift, not partway through. Dosing late pushes the long tail into the daytime sleep window and makes recovery sleep harder.
Can I use modafinil to skip sleep on shifts?
No. It masks tiredness but does not replace sleep. Shift workers still owe their body recovery sleep, and using modafinil to avoid it entirely is the main way it backfires.
