The Khavinson hypothesis is that peptides this small enter the cell, bind specific promoter regions of DNA, and nudge transcription of insulin, glucose-sensing, and islet-development proteins (Pdx1, Foxa2, Pax6) in pancreatic cells. In aged rhesus monkeys, the tetrapeptide pancragen normalized glucose, insulin, and C-peptide levels and corrected impaired glucose tolerance (PMID 25946840), and it has been studied for correcting metabolic disorders in elderly patients (PMID 22448364).
