Phenylpiracetam: Effects, Dosing, and Why You Have to Cycle It

A racetam built for cosmonauts under stress. Focus and physical drive for a morning block, gone by evening, with one real limitation.

The short answer

Phenylpiracetam is a phenyl-substituted racetam developed in the Soviet space program and sold there as Phenotropil. It inhibits the dopamine transporter, which raises the dopamine signal the brain already produces rather than flooding it like a stimulant. The result is focus and physical drive for a 3 to 5 hour block, largely cleared by evening. The main limitation is tolerance: the effect fades within 1 to 2 weeks of daily use, so it works best cycled 2 to 3 times a week, not every day.

What it is

Phenylpiracetam (also called Fonturacetam or Carphedon) is the racetam piracetam with a phenyl group added. That addition makes it more potent by weight and gives it a stimulating, drive-oriented character the parent compound does not have. It was developed for the Soviet space program and is sold in Russia and the CIS as Phenotropil and Nanotropil Novo.

How it works

Phenylpiracetam inhibits the dopamine transporter (DAT). In plain terms, it slows the reuptake of the dopamine the brain already releases, so existing signal lingers a little longer. This is the opposite of how an amphetamine-class stimulant works, which forces extra dopamine out. The selective DAT-inhibiting profile has been characterized for the S-enantiomer specifically (Zvejniece et al., 2017); the racemic tablet contains both forms.

The practical effect of tuning dopamine rather than flooding it is drive without the heavy adrenergic load, and a cleaner comedown than a classic stimulant.

Dosing and timing

The standard dose is 100 to 200mg, which is 1 to 2 tablets. Start at 100mg to find your response. There is no benefit to chasing higher; the dose-response is flat above the working range and tolerance only builds faster.

Take it in the morning or early afternoon. Onset is 30 to 60 minutes and the half-life is 3 to 5 hours, so a 9am dose is functionally gone by bedtime. Avoid late-day dosing if you want clean sleep.

Why you cycle it

This is the real limitation, stated plainly. Tolerance builds quickly with daily use, and users widely report the effect fading inside a week or two of consecutive dosing. Running it 2 to 3 times a week keeps each dose working. Treated as a daily nootropic, it stops doing much within days. It is a focused-block tool, not an everyday one.

Phenylpiracetam vs modafinil

Different mechanism, different window. Modafinil runs 12 to 15 hours and works mostly on wakefulness; phenylpiracetam is a 3 to 5 hour dopamine-transporter compound that leans toward drive and a physical edge. Many people use one for the long haul and the other for a sharp morning block. If you are weighing the wakefulness side, the modafinil and armodafinil comparison covers that pair in detail. For a focus-plus-calm peptide stack, phenylpiracetam pairs with Semax.

Stacking and cautions

A choline source such as citicoline is commonly paired with racetams to offset the headache some users get. Beyond that, a few hard notes: phenylpiracetam is on the WADA prohibited list in competition and is off-limits for tested athletes. Controlled efficacy data in healthy Western adults is thin; the evidence base is largely CIS-clinical plus animal models. Use caution with cardiac conditions, in pregnancy, or alongside other stimulants. It is a research and personal-use compound, not approved Western medicine.

Common questions

How is phenylpiracetam different from modafinil?

Different mechanism and a much shorter window. Modafinil runs 12 to 15 hours and works mostly on wakefulness. Phenylpiracetam is a 3 to 5 hour dopamine-transporter compound that leans toward drive and physical edge. Many people use modafinil for the long haul and phenylpiracetam for a sharp morning block.

Why do I need to cycle it?

Tolerance builds quickly with daily use; the effect commonly fades inside a week or two of consecutive dosing. Running it 2 to 3 times a week keeps each dose working. This is a real limitation, not a marketing line.

Will I feel it the first time?

Response varies. Some people notice a clear lift on the first dose, others take a few sessions to read it. Razumna makes no first-dose guarantee. Start at 100mg.

Is it allowed for athletes?

No. Phenylpiracetam has been on the WADA prohibited list in competition since 1998. Tested athletes should not use it.
