Modafinil vs Vyvanse
Vyvanse is an amphetamine prodrug prescribed for ADHD and binge eating disorder. Modafinil is a wakefulness drug with a much lower euphoria and dependence profile. They are not interchangeable.

The short answer
Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) is a Schedule II amphetamine prodrug, converted to active amphetamine in the body, long acting at 10 to 14 hours, and FDA approved for both ADHD and binge eating disorder. It carries more euphoria, more abuse potential, and notable appetite suppression. Modafinil is a Schedule IV eugeroic, not an amphetamine and not an ADHD drug, with a cleaner wakefulness effect and far less euphoria. Both last most of a working day, but they get there through different chemistry and carry different risk profiles.
Different classes of drug
Lisdexamfetamine is a prodrug, meaning it is inactive until enzymes in the blood convert it to dextroamphetamine, the same active compound found in other amphetamine medications. It forces the release of dopamine and norepinephrine directly. Modafinil is not an amphetamine and does not work by forcing release; it potentiates the orexin wakefulness system and binds the dopamine transporter only weakly. Same rough goal, staying alert, completely different chemistry to get there.
Duration and daily shape
Vyvanse is long acting, typically 10 to 14 hours from a single morning dose, which is one reason it largely replaced shorter amphetamine formulations for ADHD. Modafinil holds a similar range, 12 to 15 hours. On paper the durations are close. The difference is in what is happening during those hours, not how many of them there are.
Euphoria, abuse potential, and appetite
Vyvanse is Schedule II, and amphetamine's euphoria and abuse potential are well documented, which is also why it is approved for binge eating disorder, the appetite suppression is a real and sometimes clinically useful effect. Modafinil is Schedule IV, with markedly less euphoria and a milder effect on appetite. A damaging admission worth making here: modafinil still suppresses appetite for some people and is not free of side effects, it is simply a smaller version of the same problem, not the absence of it.
What each is approved and used for
Vyvanse is FDA approved for ADHD and for binge eating disorder in adults, and it is prescribed and monitored by a doctor for those diagnoses. Modafinil carries no ADHD or eating disorder indication. It is used, often off label, purely for sustained wakefulness and focus.
The honest boundary
If ADHD or binge eating disorder has been diagnosed, Vyvanse is a prescribed medical treatment, and that decision sits with a doctor who monitors dose and response. Modafinil is not a substitute for that treatment, and this comparison is not a suggestion to swap one for the other. It is written to explain the difference, not to advise on treatment. This is information, not medical advice.

Common questions
Is modafinil a weaker version of Vyvanse?
Not weaker, different. Vyvanse is an amphetamine prodrug with real euphoria and dependence potential, prescribed for ADHD and binge eating disorder. Modafinil is a separate class of drug, a wakefulness promoter, not an ADHD medication.
Does modafinil suppress appetite like Vyvanse?
Some people notice reduced appetite on modafinil, but it is a milder effect than the appetite suppression associated with amphetamine, which is pronounced enough that Vyvanse is separately approved for binge eating disorder.
Can modafinil be used instead of Vyvanse for ADHD?
No. Modafinil has no ADHD indication. If ADHD is diagnosed, treatment is a decision for a doctor, not a self-directed switch to modafinil.
