What this category is not
- Not supplements. Modafinil is a pharmacologically active compound, prescription-classified in most western jurisdictions. The mechanism is well-characterised; the regulatory framework is different from supplements.
- Not stimulants in the amphetamine sense. Modafinil does not work by releasing dopamine the way Adderall or Ritalin do. The subjective experience and side-effect profile are distinct.
- Not a substitute for sleep. Modafinil masks sleep pressure for 12–15 hours per dose. It does not replace the underlying biological function of sleep, and chronic substitution accumulates a cognitive debt.
