The Khavinson hypothesis is that peptides this small enter the cell, bind specific promoter regions of DNA, and nudge transcription of neuroprotective proteins, antioxidant enzymes, and serotonin machinery in cortical neurons. A 2014 study in Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine found Glu-Asp-Arg increased serotonin expression in cultured rat cortex cells and identified a complementary DNA sequence in the tryptophan hydroxylase gene (PMID 24909721).
