Omberacetam is a prodrug. Once absorbed, it converts to cycloprolylglycine, an endogenous dipeptide already present in the mammalian brain, which behaves as a positive modulator of AMPA receptors and is associated with raised expression of BDNF and NGF in the hippocampus. That is why the parent compound clears in minutes while the reported effect outlasts it. The neurotrophic side of that mechanism is documented in the published pharmacology, where Noopept raised NGF and BDNF expression in rat hippocampus.
