Purpose
Finasteride blocks 5-alpha-reductase, cutting the conversion of testosterone to DHT that drives male pattern hair loss. The 5mg tablet is technically the prostate (BPH) dose; for hair the clinically effective dose is 1mg, so most people run 5mg tablets by splitting them down rather than swallowing the whole thing.

Dosage
For hair loss the target is 1mg daily, not 5mg. More DHT suppression does not grow more hair, so quarter the 5mg tablet to roughly 1.25mg a day, or dose every 2 to 3 days if you react to sides. The full 5mg is only warranted if you are actually treating BPH under a doctor.
