Why modafinil isn’t working — the eight reasons to check first

Common reasons modafinil fails to produce the expected effect, ordered from most to least likely. Most are fixable without changing the drug, dose, or vendor.

1. The dose was too small

A first-time user dosing 50mg or 100mg often reports the drug “did nothing.” The standard active dose is 100–200mg in most published cognitive literature; the FDA-approved narcolepsy dose is 200mg as a single morning dose. A 100mg trial dose at the low end of the range is reasonable for first use, but the user should not conclude that modafinil doesn’t work for them based on a sub-therapeutic dose.

2. The product is counterfeit or under-dosed

7. The user took it too late

8. Individual variation
