Tadalafil vs Sildenafil: Duration vs Onset, and How to Choose
Same job, same mechanism, opposite clocks. One works fast and clears fast; the other holds a window open for a day and a half. The choice is mostly about timing.

The short answer
Tadalafil and sildenafil are both PDE5 inhibitors approved for erectile dysfunction. They work the same way; they differ on the clock. Sildenafil acts fast, in roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and lasts about 4 to 6 hours, so it is taken as needed before sex. Tadalafil is slower to peak but holds a window of up to 36 hours from one dose, which is why it suits planning ahead or a daily low dose. Neither can be combined with nitrates, which is the one rule that is not optional.
Same mechanism
Both drugs block PDE5, the enzyme that breaks down cGMP. cGMP relaxes the smooth muscle in the arteries that feed the penis, so blood flow improves on demand. Neither creates an erection on its own; both make one possible with arousal. That shared mechanism is why the side-effect profiles overlap, headache, flushing, and nasal congestion being the common ones.
The difference is timing
Sildenafil is the sprinter: onset around 30 to 60 minutes, duration roughly 4 to 6 hours, and a heavy meal slows it down. It is taken as needed, shortly before sex. Tadalafil is the long-haul option: it has a 17.5-hour terminal half-life that supports a window of up to 36 hours from a single dose (Forgue et al., 2006), and it is far less affected by food. That long window is why it is also used as a daily low dose, where the goal is spontaneity rather than timing a pill.
Which to choose
- Sildenafil if you prefer to dose for a specific occasion and want a predictable, well-known onset.
- Tadalafil as needed if you want to take it well ahead and not watch the clock, since the 36-hour window removes the timing pressure.
- Tadalafil daily low dose if you want it always-on and spontaneous, which is the protocol many clinics quietly favor.
The full dosing breakdowns are in the tadalafil guide and the sildenafil guide.
The nitrate rule, and other cautions
This is the part that is not negotiable. Do not take either drug with nitrates, including nitroglycerin for chest pain and recreational amyl nitrite (poppers). The combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Use caution with alpha-blockers and with significant cardiac conditions, and talk to a doctor before starting if you have heart disease. These are prescription medicines; coordinate use with a clinician. This is information, not medical advice, and legality for personal import varies by country.

Common questions
Which works faster, tadalafil or sildenafil?
Sildenafil, in roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and it lasts about 4 to 6 hours. Tadalafil is slower to peak but lasts up to 36 hours, so it trades speed for a much longer window.
Can I take tadalafil or sildenafil with nitrates?
No. Combining a PDE5 inhibitor with nitrates, including nitroglycerin and recreational poppers, can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. This is the one hard rule for both drugs.
Is the daily low-dose option tadalafil only?
In practice yes. Tadalafil's long half-life makes a daily low dose practical for always-on spontaneity. Sildenafil's shorter window means it is used as needed before sex.
