Modafinil vs Adderall: Different Drugs, Different Jobs
One is a wakefulness compound, the other a stimulant for a diagnosed condition. People compare them for productivity, but they are not interchangeable and one of them is not yours to self-prescribe.

The short answer
Modafinil and Adderall are often compared for productivity, but they are different classes doing different jobs. Modafinil promotes wakefulness through the orexin system with a mild profile and slow tolerance. Adderall is amphetamine, a Schedule II stimulant that forces dopamine and noradrenaline release, prescribed for ADHD and narcolepsy, with real dependence potential. Modafinil leans toward clean, sustained alertness; Adderall toward a stronger, shorter stimulant push. Adderall is a controlled medical decision, not a self-prescribed productivity tool.
Different mechanisms
Modafinil potentiates the orexin wakefulness system and shows only modest dopamine-transporter binding (Volkow et al., 2009). Adderall is a mix of amphetamine salts that actively forces dopamine and noradrenaline out of neurons. That is a fundamental difference: modafinil leans on the wakefulness system, amphetamine drives the reward and arousal system directly, which is why the two feel different and carry different risks.
What each feels like
Modafinil is usually described as clear, quiet alertness, fatigue lifted without a strong push. Adderall is a stronger, more euphoric, more obviously stimulating effect with a sharper comedown. For tasks that need sustained calm focus, many people find modafinil's flatter profile easier to work under; amphetamine's intensity is more than some tasks need.
Dependence and tolerance
This is the load-bearing difference. Amphetamine has well-established dependence and abuse potential, which is why Adderall is a Schedule II controlled substance. Modafinil's dependence potential is considered much lower, and its tolerance builds slowly (see the tolerance and cycling guide). That does not make modafinil consequence-free, but it is a different risk category from amphetamine.
The honest boundary
Adderall is a prescription stimulant for diagnosed conditions such as ADHD, and it is not something to source or self-prescribe for productivity; that decision belongs with a doctor who can assess whether a stimulant is appropriate for you. Razumna does not sell amphetamine. Modafinil is also a prescription medicine, used off-label here for focus, with the usual cautions. This article compares them for understanding, not to recommend trading one for the other. This is information, not medical advice.

Common questions
Is modafinil like Adderall?
No. Adderall is amphetamine, a Schedule II stimulant that forces dopamine and noradrenaline release. Modafinil works mainly through the orexin wakefulness system with a milder profile and slower tolerance. Different class, different feel, different risk.
Which is better for focus?
It depends on the task and the person. Modafinil's flatter, calmer alertness suits sustained focus for many people; Adderall is stronger and more stimulating. Adderall is also a controlled medical decision, not a self-prescribed option.
Is modafinil safer than Adderall?
Modafinil has a much lower dependence potential and slower tolerance than amphetamine, which is why it is not Schedule II. That is not the same as risk-free, but it is a different risk category.
