Modafinil and Alcohol: Why the Combination Backfires
Nothing dramatic usually happens, which is exactly the problem. Modafinil masks how drunk you are, and people find that out the hard way.

The short answer
The main risk of mixing modafinil and alcohol is not a dramatic chemical reaction; it is that modafinil masks alcohol's sedation, so you feel less drunk than you are and tend to drink more. That masked intoxication is where the trouble happens. There is no benefit to combining them, both load the liver, and the usual advice is to keep the two apart and not use modafinil to drink longer or harder.
The real risk is masking
Alcohol is a depressant; it slows you down and, in normal use, the growing sedation is the signal that tells you to stop. Modafinil is a wakefulness agent that blunts that signal. The result is that people drinking on modafinil often feel more sober than they are and keep going, then hit the actual level of intoxication suddenly. The danger is not a violent interaction in the test tube; it is the false read on how impaired you are.
The next-day cost
Both compounds are processed by the liver, so combining them adds load there. And modafinil does nothing to prevent a hangover; if anything, drinking more because you felt fine produces a worse one. The long half-life also means a daytime modafinil dose can still be active into an evening of drinking, extending the window where the masking happens.
The sensible approach
Keep them apart. If you are using modafinil for a working day, that is not the day to drink heavily in the evening, both because the masking risk is real and because alcohol wrecks the sleep modafinil is already taxing. There is no productivity case for the combination and a clear downside, so the honest recommendation is simply not to stack them.
The honest note
Modafinil is a prescription medicine used off-label here. Individual responses to drug and alcohol combinations vary, and anyone with liver concerns or on other medications should be especially cautious. This is information, not medical advice. Common questions
Is it dangerous to mix modafinil and alcohol?
The main danger is that modafinil masks how drunk you feel, so you drink more than you otherwise would and reach real intoxication suddenly. Both also load the liver. There is no benefit to combining them.
Will modafinil sober me up or prevent a hangover?
No. It can make you feel less drunk without actually reducing your blood alcohol, which is the risk. It does not prevent a hangover and may worsen one by encouraging more drinking.
How long should I wait between them?
Because modafinil's window is 12 to 15 hours, a morning dose can still be active in the evening. The simplest approach is not to pair a modafinil day with a heavy-drinking night at all.
