Cerebrolysin: What It Is, How the Course Works, and Why the Source Matters

Cerebrolysin is a concentrate of thousands of low-molecular-weight peptide fragments and free amino acids, made by enzymatic processing of porcine brain protein to imitate the brain's own neurotrophic signaling. It is injectable, run as a 10 to 20 day course a few times a year, not a daily pill. It has meta-analysis support in post-stroke recovery. Two non-negotiables: it must be administered with proper sterile technique, and it must be the sealed original, because grey-market vials are frequently underdosed or fake.
What it is
Cerebrolysin is a 215.2 mg/ml neuropeptide concentrate: thousands of low-molecular-weight peptide fragments and free amino acids, built by enzymatic processing of porcine brain protein to imitate the brain's own growth and repair signaling. That is why the studied benefit list reads broad rather than narrow; it acts on many neural processes at once rather than a single receptor. The evidence
The human data is more substantial than most compounds in this category. A meta-analysis of 9 randomized trials supports a benefit in early post-stroke recovery (Bornstein et al., 2018), it was the subject of the CAPTAIN traumatic brain injury program (Poon et al., 2015), and a Cochrane review examined it in vascular dementia (Cui et al., 2019). How the course works
It is course-based: commonly 5 to 30ml daily depending on the goal, run as a cycle of 10 to 20 consecutive days, then a stretch off, repeated a few times a year. It is given intramuscularly or by slow IV. This is expensive material and getting the protocol wrong mostly wastes it rather than helping.
